Observation
Still Life Drawing:
Vanitas

If you missed seeing this video to the right in class, please watch it on your own time! It is a fantastic description of what a Vanitas is!

Assignment # 1- Vanitas Study- Outlines

Divide your sketchbook paper into two sections, 6 inches tall.
In the top section, sketch roughly the Vanitas you see on your table.

TIPS
  • Draw LIGHTLY. This is called a study so you are studying what you see and practicing drawing it.
  • BLOCK OUT THE SHAPES YOU SEE. Start basic and then add in more detail as you go.
  • Draw the biggest shapes first, and then add in details.

Assignment # 3: Vanitas Final Drawing

On a sheet of good drawing paper you are going to sketch out the vanitas on your table and complete a finished value drawing. It must include the following:
  1. It must fill the page! Do not draw it too small.
  2. There must be a horizon line.
  3. There must be evidence of you using all the drawing pencils and blending.
  4. It must be drawn in proportion to the best of your ability.
  5. There must be cast shadows.
  6. Overall it has to appear like you took your time, cared about how it would look in the end! (Work ethic and effort!)
