Storybook City

For this assignment you are to create your own original vector image of a cityscape. You have a great deal of flexibility with this assignment. Your city can be modeled after a real city (Paris, New York) or it can be completely original. It can be set in any time period (victorian era, modern city with skyscrapers, or even futuristic!) You can imagine that its for a travel advertisement or a setting for a fictional story! I will be looking for your own artistic voice and creativity.

  2. You will use that collage to trace your cityscape using the shape, line and brush tools in PIXLR. The finished cityscape is assignment #2....
  3. There must be a sense of originality, whimsy and narrative to your design.

Assignment # 3:
Reflection Questions
  1. What do you think you did well with this project?
  2. What can you improve upon in this project?
  3. Explain/ Describe your city to me. What is it called, where is it, what goes on there, what is that city known for etc.
  4. Why did you choose the colors that you did for your city?

My example created in pixlr! Don't be afraid to use images and lower the opacities and adjust the hue and saturation on things. I used a star sky and the street texture as images. I also created one bush using the brush tool and then duplicated the layer many times. Use all your photoshop/pixlr skills!
PIXLR E VIDEO TUTORIAL!
***the application I am using to record lets me do 15 minutes at a time so if I sound cut off at the end...I was! But all I was going to say additionally was, I will post the finished example here and you will hand your finished cityscape in on google classroom. ****

I have not made a complete step by step by step tutorial. I have taken a few screenshots of my tips on how to approach this assignment. It is up to you to figure out the way in which YOU work best. This will be a test in your own level of work ethic and time management.

Also, below I have links to several online tutorials that outline different approaches to creating this style of drawing. Feel free to use them for reference or find your own!

My Approach
Picture
The FIRST thing you need to do is do some research! For my cityscape I decided I wanted a Japanese/Chinese influence and folklore feeling. So I looked up numerous images of Chinese and Japanese Architecture and used them as reference while I was doing my pencil sketch. I also used these reference photo for my color scheme.

In Chinese folklore, ghosts can only travel in straight lines, so the curved roofs were meant to ward off evil spirits. This was my inspiration for the narrative behind my cityscape.
