Digital Painting- Study

In art, a study is a drawing, sketch or painting done in preparation for a finished piece, or as visual notes. Studies are often used to understand the problems involved in rendering subjects and to plan what is to be used in finished works, such as light, color, form, perspective and composition.

Studies are beneficial for the artists because that artist can figure out all the technical problems (lighting, value, form etc) before they put in the work into the larger more complicated composition. Studies can also show the inner thought process of the artist, especially if they have small written notes on the sides.
Many artists do studies before they do their larger artwork. For example, Michelangelo completed hundreds of studies in his time as preparation for his larger paintings and sculptures.
