The 1970's was a decade of flamboyance and drama! It took the best parts of the mid 1960's modern designs and the late 1960's bohemian designs and combined them into one. It's safe to say there was a fashion revolution at this time. Almost everyone embraced a more theatrical style. Men AND women wore tight pants and platform shoes. This was the first time that women in all walks of life began to wear pants more than dresses or skirts. Those tight pants also began to flare and turned into the infamous bell bottomed jeans. By the late 1970's the leisure suit and the track suit came into fashion. Tunics and robes also became popular to the point where you weren't sure if they were meant to wear at home or for a night out on the town. In the beginning to mid 1970's much like the 1960's, bright colors and patterns were popular but come the late 1970's, natural neutral color palettes were popular like earth tones, black whites and grays. The most common theme throughout the 1970's were the tight fitting pants on both men and women. Female executives wore suits with pants at the office and wore jeans at home. At this point, women could really wear whatever they wanted which tied into the continuing feminist movement. Chest hair, medallions, polyester, jumpsuits, butterfly collars, bell bottoms, skin-tight t-shirts, sandals, leisure suits, flower patterned dress shirts, sideburns and, yes, tennis headbands. Men and women wore their hair natural be it straight, long, curly, frizzy or wavy. There were no limits to the amount of facial hair and chest hair that was on display. Tight on top! Flare on the bottom! High Waists! |

Casual Look
The 1970's was not all about drama 24/7. The casual wear as we know it, jeans and tee shirts, got its start in the 1970's. The attitude was indifference, anti-conformist casual chic. The Youth Counterculture of the previous decade continued keeping fashion young, hip and casual. Women executives would wear their suits by day and jeans when they get home. |
