A career that you can pursue with the skills you are learning in this course within the design field is a product or industrial designer. These are the people that design everything we use in our everyday lives from the shoes we wear to the cars we drive. Before any product is actually made, a designer creates concept art to allow the people that will ultimately produce this product get a clear idea of what it will look like and how it would be used. 

The designer must think about the client the product is intended for when creating their designs. Who will actually be using this product influences everything about the design of the item. For example a product intended for children will appear vastly different from a product intended for an adult. 

In addition to drawings of the product from varying angles, designers also include something called "call outs". Call outs are text next to a certain area of a design, drawing attention and further description for important parts of a product that the designer wants the manufacturer or investor to know about. 

​Lets examine the examples below by answering the following questions together....
  1. What is the product? 
  2. Who is this product intended for? What makes you say that?
  3. What call-outs (if any) does it have? Why are those call-outs important for the product?
​Assignment # 1

Choose a product design from the options on the project page or search "product design" or "product concept sketch" on google and choose one from those results and copy and paste that image into a new slide in your google portfolio and answer the following questions about it:
  1. What is a product designer?
  2. What do they do?
  3. What is a call-out?
  4. Why are they important?
  5. What is the product you chose from the project page? 
  6. Who is this product intended for? 
  7. What about the design makes you say that?
  8. What call-outs does it have?
  9. Why are those call-outs important for the product?
Assignment # 2

You will be designing your own sneaker/shoe and present it as a product designer would. It must include the following:
  1. This will be drawn in your sketchbooks using pencil and your sharpie markers.
  2. A drop shadow underneath the product to make it appear like it is sitting on a surface. 
  3. At least 3 call outs, describing the most important parts of the design. 
  4. At least 3 material "swatches" of the materials you would use in this shoe if it was to be manufactured and label them. 
  5. A title for your design, what company/client this product was designed for. (ex: Title: Pacific Wave, Company: Nike) 
  6. Evidence of good work ethic and EFFORT!
Assignment #3: 

When you are done with your project, and it is in your google portfolio for grading, answer the following questions in the comment section underneath your slide:
  1. What do you think you did well in this project?
  2. What do you think you could improve on in this project?
  3. What did you learn how to do, or get better at doing in this project?
  4. Who is your sneaker for?
  5. Why would your targeted buyer buy your sneaker?
