Object Portraits

Assignment # 1:

Please watch the video to the right about shape! Complete the google doc assignment on google classroom.

Giuseppe Arcimboldo
He was born in Milan in 1527. In 1562 he became the court portrait artist, court decorator and court costumer for the Viennese court. However, he is best known for his whimsical and inventive portraits or people made up of objects. Each one of these paintings has a theme, whether it be fruit, vegetables, books or the seasons! At the time, not everyone enjoyed his work since they felt he may have been mocking his subjects by creating these paintings with so much humor.

He has heavily influenced the Surrealist movement, with his use of unconventional and unexpected objects to create his portraits. For some, he is considered the father of this movement! The surrealist movement began after Arcimboldo in the 1920s and it was all about exploring our imaginations and creating art that was strange and imaginative like our dreams! A surreal artwork looks like it could be real but when we look closer at it, we see that it could not possibly be real.

His paintings are realistic since we can tell what the objects are but they are not real because there isn't an actual person that is out there made up of fruit.
