Junk Food Illustration

Pop Art Movement

Art movement that gained popularity in the 1960's. This movement was a big change from the Abstract Expressionist movement of the 1950's where art was entirely abstract and had emotional meaning. The pop art movement brought representative art back and celebrated the everyday experience and popular culture.

Pop Art has several main characteristics:
  1. Pop art subjects include subjects that appeal to the average person: food, comics, cartoons, celebrities etc.
  2. The pop art movement blurred the lines between high class culture and "low" class culture through putting everyday subjects enjoyed by the average person into high class art galleries.
  3. This was an acceptance of popular culture as being just as valid as deeper emotional meanings in artwork. Both can coexist together.
  4. Mixed Reactions: most embraced this new artwork, since their everyday lives and experiences were being validated. Others felt like this movement cheapened the artistic experience.
  5. Appropriation! the action of taking something for one's own use, typically without the owner's permission. Pop artists are notorious for appropriating images for their own artwork. Typically a pop artist would use an image in popular culture (like a celebrity portrait, cartoon character etc) and then would alter and change that image to make it their own artwork. This is a sticky situation since usually the original creator is not credited for it and can be seen as stealing.

Wayne Thiebaud
American painter born in 1920 in Arizona. He is best known for his simple yet bold paintings of edibles in an illustrative style. He is associated with the pop art movement of the 1960's because of his interest in objects of mass culture and popular appeal. As a young adult he worked in a cafe/ diner that sold cakes, pies and other American dishes that the diner displayed at their counter. This influenced him to paint these subjects.

He got artistic start as a commercial artist making advertisements for magazines.  This heavily influenced the style of his work through his use of strong shadows, simple compositions and bright, bold colors which are all characteristics of advertisements. Through his works we can see that the simple can be beautiful and the common can be considered art.
