Value Portraits

Picture
Shepard Fairy is a contemporary street artist, skateboarder, graphic designer, and illustrator. He is well know for his Andre the Giant sticker campaign and became internationally known with his "Hope" poster of Barack Obama during his 2008 campaign. His posters have a cutout aesthetic and utilize a limited color palette to create a visually dynamic look. The poster as a medium at its core is advertisement, meant to draw the viewer in and get the message across quickly. As a result it is also inherently political, used by all sides for the same purpose: to sell an idea whatever it may be.  His most recent series was done in protest of President Donald Trump's election to office and features three minority women of color, with slogans such as "We the People" are greater than fear, protect each other, and defend dignity.

Assignment # 1: Value Portrait Questions
  1. Describe what Shepard Fairey's work looks like.
  2. Why does he use simple color palettes and a stencil style?
  3. What are all the ways posters are used for?
  4. Copy and paste Fairey's protest work after Trump's election into this slide.
  5. What is the message behind each of the 3 posters based on the images, colors and text? (the Muslim, black and Hispanic women)
  6. "Powerful photos change the world, but I also think that we are overwhelmed with the sheer quantity of them these days, I think we are becoming a bit numb. I think art can help wake people up. A powerful illustration, like these, has the ability to stop a person in the street."  Do you agree or disagree with this quote? Why?
