The 1990's
The 90s was a return to minimalist fashion, which is in stark contrast to the 1980's loud flashy styles. The "Grunge" look defined the decade, as well as some 70s styles that re-emerged. As a result of greater availability of the internet,  global access to the internet and satellite TV,  fashion became more global and more homogenized (the same) around the world.

Athletic Wear/Neon Colors:
Neon was incredibly popular in the 90's thanks to youth rave culture as well as geometric patterns in fabric. Leggings with oversize sweaters, sports bras, hoodies, white Ked sneakers, leg warmers overtop of leggings were all popular styles in the 90s.

Super Models:
Dominated by supermodels like Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, and Kate Moss. Naomi Campbell was the first African American women to grace the cover of French Vogue. Time magazine and American Vogue. Kate Moss was controversially popular for her "heroin chic" look, which consisted of a size 0 frame and pale, ghost-like skin and makeup.

Casual Chic
This style remained unisex largely as the popularity of denim continued to rise. Denim remained loose and usually tapered with a high waist. Light wash denim was popular.
Dark stone wash jeans, spaghetti strap tops, track suits, sweat pants, white and black trainers from Adidas, Sketchers and Nike were popular.

Grunge
The grunge look was popularized by the alternative music scene from bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and Soundgarden and tv shows like "My So Called Life".  This look consisted of flannel shirts, ripped jeans, doc martins, combat boots, band tee shirts, oversize knit sweaters, birkenstocks, and long and droopy skirts.

"School Girl" Look
The school girl look became popular for women of all ages and consisted of plaid mini skirts, baby doll dresses, baby doll tee shirts, knee high socks, thigh high socks, mary jane shoes, overalls, mini back packs, tights, and chunky shoes. Think the movies "Clueless" and "The Craft"

Television and Music
All you had to do was turn on the TV to get all your fashion trends. Musical artists like Nsync, Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls, TLC, Destiny's Child, 2 Pac, Dr. Dre, Biggie, etc. Television shows like "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air", "Saved by the Bell", Boy Meets World, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer all exemplify 90s teen fashion trends. MTV was hugely popular for its music videos and for its show TRL. Kids shows like "Clarissa Explains it All" also exemplified 90s fashion. Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure....the list goes on and on!
